Tom Cruise on ‘Mission: Impossible 7’s’ Long Awaited Release Following COVID closures, “We Dreamed About It”

When the sixth Mission: Impossible movie was being filmed, at the height of the pandemic, it was a far cry from the social distance standards.

Over the course of its multi-year production, the Tom Cruise movie experienced numerous difficulties brought on by COVID-19. Filming was halted at least five times because of the pandemic, and Cruise and writer-director Christopher McQuarrie both fell ill as a result. Audio of Cruise telling the cast to follow COVID guidelines went viral.

As a result, Cruise told The Hollywood Reporter on Monday night that it was “amazing” that he and the crew behind the movie were able to overcome those difficulties and show the movie to an audience. The movie is ultimately scheduled to open in theaters on Wednesday.

“We discussed it. We fantasized about it. It’s very, really wonderful,” added Cruise. “On Top Gun: Maverick, they kept hammering home the film’s message, and for [McQuarrie] and I, this is such an ambitious film. And after everything that happened, the production of the film became even more difficult. Therefore, receiving this response…is very, very meaningful.

The Flash, Elemental, and Indiana Jones were among the summer tentpoles that underperformed at the box office, prompting the production of Dead Reckoning.

Theatrical chains are probably hoping that the most recent Mission: Impossible film lives up to and even surpasses the franchise’s record-breaking $65 million or more North American opening.

However, Cruise, a strong supporter of the cinematic experience, isn’t yet concerned about ticket sales.

He said to THR when asked if he felt pressure for his most recent movie to do well at the box office, “I’m simply going to make the greatest movies I can, and I want them all to do well, and I want all the other movies to do well.

“I invest everything in a movie, thinking about its quality and longevity,” he continued. Making the greatest movie I can to delight the audience for that particular genre is essentially all I have to do.
