Tokyo: A deal for U.K. distribution for Toho’s “Godzilla Minus One”

The eagerly awaited Kaiju movie, which will wrap out the Tokyo International Film Festival the following week, is the 37th Godzilla movie and the first one to be made entirely in Japan since 2016.

Distribution for Godzilla Minus One, the newest entry in Toho’s venerable mega-monster franchise and the closing film of the Tokyo International Film Festival, has been secured for the United Kingdom and Ireland. For a December 15 release, Glasgow-based distributor Anime Ltd. has chosen the action movie.

The movie will be released in 200–250 theatres, making it Anime Ltd.’s largest live-action release to date. The Godzilla franchise is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, and Godzilla Minus One is the first entirely Japanese-made entry in the series since 2016.

Renowned CG animator and VFX artist Takashi Yamazaki (Lupin III: The First, The Great War of Archimedes) is the writer and director of Godzilla Minus One. Starring in the movie are Sakura Ando, Kuranosuke Sasaki, Yuki Yamada, Minami Hamabe, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Yuki Yamada, and Munetaka Aoki. This is actually Yamazaki’s third on-screen incarnation of Godzilla; the other two were CG versions of the character in Always: Sunset on Third Street 2 (2007) and Godzilla the Ride (2021) from Seibu-en. The new movie is a Godzilla picture set in the early post-World War II era.

According to Toho’s official tale synopsis, Japan’s economy has completely collapsed since the war. When Godzilla shows up, the nation descends into chaos.

Japan hosted the international premiere of Godzilla Minus One on October 18, and on November 3, it will appear in theatres there. On November 1, Toho International will also release the movie in North America. It is the Godzilla franchise’s 37th game.

The most well-known aspect of Anime Ltd.’s business is its distribution of Japanese animation; it recently oversaw the release of popular titles like One Piece Film: Red and The First Slam Dunk in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
