Grant Gustin began as Barry Allen on The CW in 2013 and has since established a wonderful career as the DC hero, but The Flash 2023 will overlook him.

Grant Gustin has been snubbed from 2023’s The Flash, despite building a brilliant legacy over his ten years portraying Barry Allen, a.k.a. the Flash, on The CW. The Flash debuted in 2014 after Gustin first appeared in 2013 as Barry Allen in a backdoor pilot on The CW’s premiere DC series, Arrow. He’s since made several guest appearances on The CW’s other DC series, including Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman. The Flash season 9 was announced to be the final season of the successful series, kicking off in February 2023, with the finale airing in summer 2023, marking ten years since Gustin first sported his superhero suit as the speeding protector of Central City.
While Grant Gustin dominated The CW’s DC series as the Flash, Ezra Miller was cast in the character for the DCEU, making cameo appearances in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad before making their main debut in Justice League in 2017. The Flash in 2023 will be Miller’s first solo feature as Barry Allen, and it will reset the DC Universe, allowing James Gunn and Peter Safran to reinvigorate the franchise beginning with Superman: Legacy in 2025. Initially, it was assumed that Grant Gustin would appear in The Flash, especially given the next film’s timeline-jumping plot, but these dreams may have been destroyed by the man himself.
Grant Gustin Deserves to Appear in the Flash Film in some capacity.
Grant Gustin recently confirmed to TVLine that he will not only not be starring in The Flash, but that he was never ever approached with the possibility of doing so. Gustin has been playing Barry Allen for eleven years, significantly longer than Ezra Miller, and perhaps delivered a more popular portrayal as the metahuman speedster. The Flash would have been the ideal vehicle to honor Gustin’s long career as Barry Allen, especially since Gustin and Miller’s versions of the Flash already had a relationship thanks to their appearances together in The CW’s DC crossover event, “Crisis on Infinite Earths.”

“Crisis on Infinite Earths,” which aired in 2019 and 2020, was The CW’s sixth crossover event, bringing together characters from across the franchise to preserve the multiverse. During this incident, Gustin’s Barry Allen meets Miller’s iteration in the Speed Force, raising expectations that the favor will be returned by letting Gustin to appear on the big screen in The Flash. Miller’s version of the character even took the Flash moniker from Gustin’s Barry Allen at this point, so it would have been fantastic to have Gustin’s superb portrayal of the character honored in some form in 2023’s The Flash.
